O'Neil, who was in her high school years during the auditions, tried out for the third season of Canadian Idol within the early months of 2005. She was able to make it into the top tier of contestants after the judges praised her vocal ability. Her performance was highly applauded by the jury. However, O'Neil suffered a significant defeat in top 10 and Top 9 final weeks when she received votes for the lowest 3 and the the bottom 2. Judges were amazed at her performance and recommended viewers to select those who sing well and had a strong voice, like Melissa. O'Neil was always delivering top performance since then, never finished lower than the top three. Her two additional performances on September 7,2005, where O'Neil advanced into the final two of the finals of the competition, Werner said that in the morning, the newspapers would be reporting O'Neil's triumph over Rex Goudie in the finals. She became her third Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil was immediately congratulated by Canadian Premier Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
