O'Grady was born in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. Her parents raised her in Wheaton (Illinois) and she was a graduate of the North High School in Wheaton. Before making the move into Los Angeles, she appeared in several commercials. Career O'Grady started her career as a the model of Montgomery Ward, and well performing commercials in a variety of ways. She first appeared on the screen with the romantic drama She's Having a Baby in 1988. She later played a recurring lead in ABC drama China Beach alongside Dana Delany. Apart from guest-starring in various shows, and in independent and produced for television in addition, she was an actor in a variety of TV shows. Her first major role was in the role of Donna Abandando on the ABC Police show NYPD Blue. O'Grady, who played the large-haired secretariat from 1993 to 1996 received Emmy Award nominees each year for Outstanding Drama Series Supporting actor. With her fellow cast members, she received an award, the Screen Actors Guild Award, for the Best Performance by an Ensemble in Drama Series.
